Abstract: Alkali-Aggregate Reactions have been studied at nanoscale. In-situ and ex-situ experiments on the alkali dissolution of mica have been carried out with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) setup. The cleavage properties of mica make it extremely suitable for nanoscale surface evolution studies. Crystal growth on the basal [001] surface of muscovite has been quantitatively monitored in order to gain insights on the kinetics and mechanisms of silicate dissolution and precipitation reactions in an alkali environment.
