Abstract: Ceramic materials can be deformed superplastically provided they have fine (< 1 µm diameter) equiaxed grain sizes kept stable during deformation. The factors controlling superplasticity as well as the role played by the nanoscale character of the grain size distribution on superplasticity will be discussed in this paper. Two extreme examples will be described to emphasize the importance of the grain size and the grain boundary nature on the superplasticity in ceramics.
