Abstract: This paper presents ongoing research activities at the Center for Transportation Infrastructure Safety and Security (TIS2), Alabama A&M University on the potential application of nanotechnology based devices and materials in concrete to improve its durability. In the first part of this paper we will present recently developed NanoElectroMechanical Systems (NEMS) for concrete durability monitoring and quality control. The developed NEMS are wireless nanomachines designed to improve the understanding of the behavior of concrete material during mixing and curing, and when the concrete structure is put in service by 1) measuring density and viscosity of unset concrete in mixing and pumping equipment, 2) measuring hydration products and strength development, 3) measuring shrinkage induced stresses, and 4) measuring certain key parameters affecting the durability of concrete structures such as temperature, moisture, chloride, pH and carbon dioxide. In the second part, the application of multifunctional nano materials for concrete structures will be discussed. The adding of nano-particles into concrete admixture will improve the concrete rheology as well as will accelerate its hydration process and control its microstructure resulting in stronger, tougher, more durable and self-sensing concrete structures.
