Abstract: Current activities in construction:
- Studies leading to the improvement of resistance of mineral substrates against damage caused by water and dissolved materials, control of hydrophobicity
- Development of coatings with unique surface structure achieving controlled hydrophobicity of the surface with self cleaning properties
- Development of coatings with a photo catalytic effect and with ultra hydrophilic characteristics
- Study of utilization of commercially available but also custom prepared nanoparticles in coatings and evaluation of their influence especially on increased hardness, abrasion and barrier properties. Application of similar materials to cementitious surfaces. Protection of steel reinforced concrete against carbonation.
Synpo is currently evaluating various types of modified clays for these various applications. Some of these have been prepared using proprietary technology of Synpo. Various dispersion techniques are also being evaluated including use of proprietary compatibilizers and mechanical dispersing procedures. Synpo also intends to develop new test procedures to determine hardness and abrasion resistance of these special coatings „in-situ“. To determine degree of intercalation and exfoliation Synpo uses combination of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray scattering.
