Abstract: One of the promising areas for application of nano-composites in construction is protective coatings for existing and new structures. Recent advances make it possible to make these coating not only self cleaning but they can also be used to clean the pollutants present around the structures. This paper deals with the use of an inorganic-polymer coating for the protection and strengthening of transportation infrastructures. The constituents of the coating include nano-silicates and other nano-size activators and fillers. The results presented focus on two demonstration projects. The first one was a coating to protect a concrete wall located in a highway in New Jersey State. The second one was wrapping of columns with carbon fibers and inorganic-polymer, which is located in Maryland State. Details of the projects and the basic study conducted for the evaluation of durability of the coating are presented.
