Abstract: It is well-known that the shape and size of the aggregates in concrete exert a great impact on microstructure as well as macro-properties of concrete. However, the challenge is to construct an aggregate particle with its shape closer to the nature and to further simulate packing of particles with arbitrary shape in three-dimensions (3-D). This paper displays the methodology to construct an arbitrary shape particle via mathematical tool, and the information of the aggregate obtained by the X-ray tomography. Furthermore, a detection overlapping algorithm of particles is developed. Moreover, based on the detection overlapping algorithm, an arbitrary shaped particle packing system is realized. And the reliability of the above inter-particle overlapping algorithm is verified in terms of visualization of serial section plane of particle packing system. The contribution of this paper is helpful to further investigate the microstructure and macro-performance of modeling concrete which owns arbitrary-shaped particle system.
