Abstract: On the basis of the traditional principle of service life consideration for marine concrete structures, by including the aspects pertinent to sustainability and resilience issues, a highly integrated philosophy and methodology are highlighted in this paper, where confusion and challenge concerning the implementation of this newly proposed principle in practice are dealt with. Research programs to handle this challenge, which are carried out recently at Shenzhen University, are outlined. Furthermore, barriers and future development about the service life consideration in the proposed framework are addressed. It is believed that the proposed philosophy and principle could lead to a more sensible and fruitful research and development in the future.
