Abstract: The author presents a brief review of some efforts about the use of primers to reinforcing steel in concrete exposed to the marine environment of the Northern Yucatan Peninsula. There are discussions about important and controversial points of this topic like galvanic couples, bond loss, steel superficial conditions, bad and good primers, behaviour at lab and real structures. Some of the main conclusions indicate that primers have different effectiveness in function of the reinforcing bar superficial state, even if they were not designed for alkaline environments; the galvanic effect of the repair in the repaired, non-repaired and interface zones of the repaired bar is limited in time and extension; in real structures, the barrier system worked well as in laboratory cases.
