Abstract: The influence of the chemical and physical properties of the components of limestone
calcined clay cement and their proportions was studied. Rate of hydration, phase
development and strength development was studied. It was found that while the relative
proportions of clay and limestone have a significant influence on strength development, the
fraction of clinker replaced in the cement has little influence. It was also found that clays
containing more than around 60% kaolinite did not significantly improve the properties of the
mix. Similarly, the purity and composition of limestone also had little influence on strength.
However, it was seen that the fineness of clinker in the blend has a significant influence. It
was found that the gypsum content can be optimized using isothermal calorimetry
measurements, although there is no clear influence on the long-term strength development.
The results in this study will be useful for designing blends of LC3
.
