Abstract: In several recent studies instrumented indentation testing has been applied to characterize the
viscoelastic properties of bitumen binders; the primary motivation for using this type of test
has been its ability to characterize materials properties at small length scales. While previous
indentation studies on bitumen produced results of great interest, they also report a
formidable difference between the conventional and indentation tests. Accordingly, this
research aims to identify the optimal indentation test methodology for obtaining the linear
viscoelastic properties of bitumen-based materials. A new method, capable of measuring two
independent viscoelastic functions from indentation test data, is presented. Proposed
indentation method is evaluated, numerically and experimentally, with respect to its
capability to measure linear-viscoelastic response of bitumen and bitumen-filler mastics. The
indentation results are verified by dynamic shear rheometer measurements. Finite element
simulations of the indentation tests are used to identify the potential sources of errors and
quantify their effect on the measurements. The limits of linear-viscoelasticity, for bituminous
materials, are determined based on DSR measurements and implications on indentation tests
are discussed. Based on the presented numerical and experimental results, an optimal
indentation testing technique is proposed for the viscoelastic characterization of bituminous
materials.
