Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of aggregate gradation on rutting
performance of AR-Gap mixtures. The scope included: laboratory evaluation of rutting with
the aid of wheel tracking test at high pavement temperatures on AR-Gap mixtures accounting
for six gap-gradations specified by agencies across different countries. Further, two
representative gap-gradations were chosen to evaluate the effect of binder content on rutting
characteristics of AR-Gap mixtures. It was found that the rutting performance of asphalt
mixtures was significantly influenced by the aggregate proportions in the aggregate skeletal
structure. Increased rutting resistance was found in the gradations with higher percentage of
6.4 to 12.5 mm sized aggregates. Further, higher binder content resulted in an increased rut
depth indicative of the tender mixes’ decreased rutting resistance. However, variation in the
binder content produced limited or no impact on the rutting trends of AR-Gap mixtures. It is
envisioned that the study would provide important understanding pertaining to the selection
of the aggregate gradation to improve the rutting performance of AR-Gap mixtures in the
field.
