Abstract: With recent changes in mechanistic-empirical pavement design approach, Complex Modulus
(CM) of asphalt concrete is a critical input for pavement design. The CM values of asphalt
concrete are determined under laboratory conditions using frequency sweep-temperature
sweep tests. Subsequently, mastercurve is constructed using time-temperature superposition
principle. Even under best quality control, significant scatter is found with results obtained
with CM tests. This scatter in the data can be mainly attributed to material heterogeneity,
testing issues, human factors etc. This study addresses the issue of scatter through uncertainty
quantification techniques. For this purpose, several CM mastercurves constructed with same
mixture were used. The CM values at a particular reduced frequency were analysed using
uncertainty quantification techniques. The results indicate that parameters used for
quantifying uncertainty are dependent on testing frequency, testing temperature, and reduced
frequency.
