Abstract: In this paper, the water evaporation rate in asphalt samples ranges from 10% to 26% of the air
void content was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions to understand the effect
of air void content on the water evaporation process from asphalt mixture. Macroporosity, pore
size distribution, water retention curve and tortuosity of asphalt samples were analysed using
CT x-ray tomography scans. Moreover, a theoretical model was tested experimentally to
estimate the onset of the second stage evaporation. It was observed that in the range of asphalt
mixtures studied evaporation rate is related predominantly to the air void content, pore size
distribution and tortuosity. Water retention curves for asphalt material with air void in the range
studied in this research show that asphalt material has no ability to retain water, and
subsequently stage-1 evaporation in asphalt is neglectable. The result explains the range of
evaporation rate at the start of the second stage for different air void content asphalt material,
and provide a mean for estimating these rates.
