Abstract: Warm mix asphalt is being used widely in many countries to reduce emissions during
bituminous mixture’s production and maintains required workability at reduced temperatures.
Moisture is considered to be one of the major sources for initiation and propagation of several
distresses in flexible pavements. Moisture can infiltrate into the bituminous layers through
cracks or interconnected voids. Application of wheel loads over the pavement surface
pressurizes the moisture present inside the voids and exerts excessively higher pressure over
the bitumen-aggregate interface. Repeated application of wheel loads leads to either cohesive
or adhesive failures at the bitumen-aggregate interface leading to de-bonding of the aggregate
particles. This study focuses on evaluating the combined influence of temperature and
pressure on the moisture resistance of dense bituminous mixtures blended with Evotherm.
Dense bituminous mixture specimens were prepared using viscosity grade bitumen to target
air voids of 70.5%. These specimens were subjected to conditioning in a moisture induced
sensitivity tester at varied temperatures (40 to 60 C) and pressures (276 to 414 kPa). The
specimens were then tested for indirect tensile strength. It is observed that there is a marked
difference in the performance of bituminous mixtures blended with Evotherm when
compared to the control specimens.
