Abstract: Green building techniques have attracted wide research in the recent past due to a rise in
demand to reduce the energy consumption of buildings during their operational phase. In
tropical countries, the major portion of this energy consumption is due to cooling load
required for providing thermal comfort. In an attempt to tackle this problem, many solutions
have been presented by various researchers in the past, of which application of Phase Change
Materials (PCMs) is of great interest due to their high latent heat storage capacity in a short
range of temperatures and their low thermal conductivity. Various techniques have been
developed in the past for the incorporation of PCMs into building envelope. However, with
the advent of microencapsulation techniques, it has become possible to incorporate PCMs as
an integral component of the building construction materials. This paper is a recapitulation of
the work carried out by various researchers on the utilization of phase change materials in
building construction.
