Abstract: Due to its outstanding properties, Ultra-high Performance Concrete (UHPC) has drawn
great attention with an increasing numbers of application cases recently in China. However,
there remains numerous challenges for the large scale implementation of UHPC. In this work,
challenges of UHPC as high viscosity, large autogenous shrinkage and quality control in a
specific field application – Nanjing Fifth Yangtze River Bridge were introduced.
Correspondingly, key technology to prepare UHPC were listed in detail. Based on the
fundamental rheological theory, a special designed superplasticizer was applied to achieve an
excellent workability with low viscosity and high fluidity. Besides, by introducing coarse
aggregate, shrinkage compensation and shrinkage reducing techniques, the volume stability of
UHPC at both material and structure levels was efficiently improved. The preparation and
processing of UHPC on site was also investigated based on considerable experimental studies.
Finally, by implementing these technologies, UHPC with high performance was successfully
applied in the deck of bridge.
