Abstract: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) refers to cement-based materials exhibiting
compressive strength higher than 150 MPa, high ductility and excellent durability. High
cracking tendency of UHPC derived from autogenous shrinkage can be a concern due to its
high binder content and low water to binder ratio. This paper reviews shrinkage properties of
UHPC. The effect of cement, water content, aggregate, chemical admixtures, supplementary
cementitious materials (SCMs), curing conditions, and fiber on the shrinkage of UHPC were
summarized. Different methods have been developed to compensate and/or reduce the
shrinkage of UHPC. The use of internal curing materials, such as super-absorbent polymer and
light-weight aggregate, shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) and expensive agent could reduce the
shrinkage of UHPC with a proper condition. In addition, it also could reduce shrinkage of
UHPC by optimizing the binder materials, such as using the fly ash, rich rush ash, and limestone
powder.
