Abstract: The practices of mineral additions to ordinary Portland cement have become increasingly
important for the sustainable development in high performance cementitious materials. One
key consideration for the blended formulations focuses on the effects of mineral
additives/fillers on the rheological behaviours of the fresh mixtures. In this investigation, two
groups of mineral additives were introduced into ordinary Portland cement paste, namely:
SiO2-based (silica flour, silica fume and waste glass powder), and CaCO3-based (grounded
limestone powder and waste seashell powder). The rheological performances and the related
early hydration kinetics of fresh cement paste were studied and followed by rheological and
calorimetric measurements. Roles of the two different groups of mineral additions on the
rheological and calorimetric behaviours of the fresh cement paste were compared and
discussed.
