Abstract: In this work the effect of different aggregates, such as ultra-fine sand, quartz sand, basalt,
and corundum on the mechanical properties of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is
reported. The resulting UHPC was easy to prepare by adding low amount silica fume and
large amount Ground granulated blast Furnace Slag and exhibited high strength. The effects
of aggregate content and type on the compressive and flexural strengths of UHPC were
studied. Results indicated that the optimal ratio of basalt to cementitious binder (CB) of
UHPC with basalt was 1:1. Moreover, with the ratio of ultra-fine sand to CB increasing from 0
to 0.5, the compressive strength of UHPC incorporating ultra-fine sand increased by 6%.
Furthermore, the aggregate type had a significant effect on the compressive strength of UHPC.
The compressive strength of UHPC containing quartz sand and corundum after curing 3 days
under hot water at 90°C was 155.2 MPa and 154.4 MPa, respectively, which was higher than
that of UHPC with basalt by more than 8.3%. The UHPC with corundum didn’t obtain higher
strength, probably because the density of corundum was large resulting in obvious sink
phenomenon.
