Abstract: Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a kind of relatively new and advanced
materials with high compressive and tensile strengths. Also, the bond strength between
strands and UHPC is better than that in traditional concrete. This fact needs to be quantified,
as there is no standard specification for UHPC adhesion performance and general UHPC
design. The bond behavior of prestressing strands in UHPC is investigated in this study by 36
conducting direct tension pull-out tests. The effect of embedment length and concrete cover
on bond strength were investigated in those tests. The tensile force in strands and slip of the
end of reinforcement were measured, and then the average bond stress was examined. It was
found that the bond behavior of deformed reinforcing steel in UHPC is different from that in
traditional concrete in many aspects. In general, the development length and anchorage
length of strands in UHPC can be significantly reduced. Guidance on the embedment of
strands into UHPC is provided.
