Abstract: This paper presented a novel method to improve flexural properties of ultra-high
performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) by using one L-shape device with a narrow
horizontal channel to control flow of fresh mixture. Mixtures at water-to-binder ratios of 0.22
were prepared by adding 1%, 2% and 2.5% volume of steel fibers respectively. Three fiber
orientation parameters (including fiber orientation angle, fiber orientation number and fiber
orientation coefficient) were evaluated quantitatively using an image analysis technique.
Based on experimental results, this type of flow controlling method increased fiber orientation
number and fiber orientation coefficient from 0.6-0.7 and 0.4-0.6 to 0.7-0.9 and 0.6-0.8
respectively. The best enhancement on flexural strength, toughness, deflection at modulus of
rupture and maximum deflection reached 64.3%, 63.4%, 77.1% and 13.4% respectively.
Moreover, this method to control fiber orientation provides a great potential for reducing the
production cost of UHPFRC without degradation of flexural properties.
