Abstract: UHPC mixes are non-air-entrained. However, air voids are still observed. This study
visualize and quantify the air void characteristics in UHPC by the unit weight method on
fresh mix and linear traverse method on hardened mix coupled with the stereo microscopic
evaluation. Results indicate UHPC mixes normally have 4-7% air content in total and the air
void profile resembles that in regular air-entrained concrete mixes. Air content needs to be re-
normalized for an accurate comparison between UHPC and regular concrete mixes having
vastly different paste contents. The primary reason for the introduction of air voids in UHPC
mixes is the excessive use of superplasticizer. Air content is found not to be the dominant
factor in salt frost scaling in UHCP mixes.
