Abstract: This article studied the influence of size effect and end constraint on the mechanical
properties of ultra-high ductile cementitious composites, in short UHDCC. The fiber material
used in this paper is UHMWPE fiber. UHDCC dogbone specimens with five different
thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 40mm were adopted for uniuniaxial tensile tests.
Compressive tests were conducted on UHDCC cubes which having 3 different sizes and 3
different end constraints, as well as UHDCC cylinders with 3 different sizes and uniform
aspect ratio. The tensile test results indicated that the tensile strain capacity of UHDCC
reached 7.11%, and no significant size effect of the tensile strength and tensile strain capacity
of UHDCC was found. The compressive test results indicated that UHDCC exhibits excellent
deformability under increasing compression. As the level of end constraint gradually was
reduced, the compressive strength of UHDCC cubes decreases and the compressive
strain-hardening behavior gradually disappeared. When the end constraint was eliminated,
compressive strength of UHDCC cubes with different sizes is close to that of the UHDCC
cylinders. The experimental study demonstrated that end constraint has significant influence
on the compressive property of UHDCC while the size effect is minimal for the cementitious
material with ultra-high ductility.
