Abstract: The experiences from damage investigations have been structured into a methodology for diagnosing moisture damages and moisture problems, with one completely dominating purpose: to find the correct diagnosis! Without a completely correct diagnosis, remedial measures cannot be properly proposed and may not be cost effective. The responsibility for the damages or problems cannot be correctly placed without a correct diagnosis. Many damage investigations have severe lack of stringent causality in their claimed diagnosis. Certain requirements must be fulfilled in the diagnosis of a moisture damage to be called a diagnosis.
The paper presents the methodology and gives some examples where it has been applied. The methodology includes: necessary requirements to fulfil, the technique to show that a damage is due to moisture, methods to find the source of moisture and tools to explain the true cause of a damage.
