Abstract: This paper examines the influence of alkaline solutions on the early-age properties of alkali-activated slag/fly ash blends. The results show that the acceleration or delay of setting time and the strength development mainly depend on the nature of the anion presence in activator rather than its pH value. The presence of silicate ions in the activator reduces the setting time and increases the strength development, while in the presence of carbonate and sulfate ion, the setting time is delayed and strength development occurs much slower. The major reaction product in all mixes is C-A-S-H type gel with chain structure.
