Abstract: Shrinkage in cement-based materials can lead to early microcracking. The phenomenon is related to the change of volume in cementitious materials at early ages due to thermal contraction, autogenous and drying shrinkage. The coupled problem of drying and cracking is modeled in this work by the poromechanical and phase-field approach. The average properties of the solid and the liquid water phases are taken into account. In this formulation, quantitative mechanical and hygric properties are fundamental. We present some computational examples of cracks due to drying shrinkage. The examples also include external restraint.
