Abstract:
With the increasing diversity of concretes available, there is a need to move beyond the current prescriptive specifications for durability, toward performance-based indicators. This workshop examined methods being proposed to evaluate the durability-related performance of concrete, both in the laboratory and on site.

A number of keynote speakers have been invited to give a perspective of the development of a performance based approach in different parts of the world.

Progress in this area is of great practical relevance in developing predictive models for the performance of concrete over the lifetime of structures, which is often in excess of 100 years.

The aim of this workshop was to bring together leading researchers in the field and to promote dialogue. The presentations and discussions were sorted into four different sessions:
1. Performance approaches for durability (based on laboratory or site data) - Measurement of durability indicators and monitoring parameters in laboratory
2. Service-life predictive models based on durability indicators
3. Measurement of concrete performance of real structures or under natural conditions and in situ methods - Comparison with performance testing in laboratory
4. Impact of supplementary cementing materials on microstructure and durability performance

All the participants are gratefully acknowledged for their high-quality contribution to the workshop and to these proceedings. Special thanks are due to the reviewers having accomplished an impressive contribution, having to work very hard in particular for some late submissions of full-text papers. The quality and the success of the workshop were also linked to the important endeavour of the local organising committee, who worked continuously for having every detail fixed for the best possible hosting conditions of the participants of the workshop.
