Abstract:
In recent years a number of models have been developed to allow for service life prediction of reinforced concrete structures. However, these models prove to be less practical for regular use by practitioners, i.e. maintenance engineers and inspectors. From an owner's point of view the actual condition has to be presented preferentially by a single quantifiable performance indicator as a basis for decision-making. In order to fulfil this practical owner's requirement a parameter termed CON has been introduced employing a simple, unambiguous and clear definition. Moreover, the development of the condition over time can be calculated with a simple mathematical expression derived from the error-function solution for chloride ingress into concrete. Although the calculation method has to be validated on real structures the simple approach shows considerable promise to be used by practitioners for estimating the residual service life or the appropriate time of intervention. However, the approach should be further improved in order to include the spatial variability and stochastic nature of chloride ingress.
