Abstract: Cementitious materials are exposed to chemical attack by soft water or acidic solutions in many environments. The biogenic sulphuric acid produced in the sewer crown attacks the pipe material and can result in severe corrosion. In the past decades many acid resistance tests have been developed worldwide to evaluate the acid resistance of cementitious materials. This paper shows results from a comparative study on four purely chemical acid resistance tests developed in Germany and Belgium. All tests were operated with sulphuric acid, but most boundary conditions differed strongly. Five concrete or mortar mixes had been produced of which two, concrete O and concrete S, are presented in this paper. The sample analysis was done according to the regular testing procedures. In two tests the corrosion depth of concrete O was higher than of concrete S, but in one test the performance of concrete O was better than of concrete S. These results demonstrate that the resistance tests are not fully transferable to the other tests. This can be caused by the different boundary conditions of the tests, the different criteria for the acid resistance and the various methods used for analysis.
