Abstract: Due to rapid growth of world population and especially along the coastal area, marine ecological engineering is identified as a new business segment. This new application requires the development of innovative concretes that, in addition to their usual property, provide improved bio-receptivity. Our objective is to get functionalized concrete surface that can promote fast micro-algae colonization and thus will favor biodiversity.
A specific laboratory test has been developed to screen and evaluate the bio-receptivity of several concrete mix-designs and surface textures. This laboratory test shows that the cement nature and the surface texture are the two key-parameters that influence the early-age step of micro-algae colonization on the marine/concrete interface. One of these new types of concrete with improved bio-receptivity has been produced to design artificial reefs as part of REXCOR project, which aims at restoring the marine ecosystem at the Cortiou calanque (creek) located close to Marseille.
