Abstract: An experimental module simulating physical, chemical and biological conditions of a marine environment has been created in order to study the behaviour of a cementitious material immersed in seawater. Colonization of materials was evaluated by means of three different tools: image analysis, reflectance and fluorescence. Two types of mortars were studied: standardized mortar and scallop aggregate based mortar. Artificial seawater and Cylindrotheca closterium diatom were used to reproduce the chemical and biological environment of seawater. Results validate the use of the experimental module and show that the presence of calcium carbonate seems to have an effect on the colonization of mortar specimens by diatom C. closterium.
