Abstract: Alginate based and chitosan based hydrogels were investigated in this study for encapsulation of bacteria for self-healing cracks. Both of them had a good pH-responsiveness: low swelling in the alkaline cement filtrate (about 12g water/g hydrogel) and a higher swelling capacity of 40 g water/g hydrogel under slightly alkaline condition of 8~11. Due to this, the hydrogels had limited negative effect on the strength, only 5% strength loss was observed in the specimens with 1m% chitosan based hydrogel added. Furthermore, the chitosan based hydrogel had an excellent compatibility with the bacterial spores, which can completely revive the activity within 3 days. Enhanced sealing efficiency was seen in the specimens with the encapsulated spores, which was due to the bacterial calcium carbonate precipitation. The specimens with chi-HS had an evident higher sealing efficiency (88%-90%) than those with chi-H (80%), at the same initial water flow range.
