Abstract: Because of the low water-binder ratio, high-strength concrete is sticky which leads to an increasing resistance to place and pump. In this work, with the viscosity characterized by flow time of mini V-Funnel and plastic viscosity, the effect of quartz powders with different specific surface area on the viscosity of fresh mortar at the water-binder ratio of 0.3 and the mechanism on viscosity effect were investigated. The results show that quartz powders are effective in reducing the viscosity of mortar, and the finer quartz powders lead to lower viscosity. As the flow spread value is the same, the decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions caused by low dosage and high adsorption efficiency of superplasticizer, and the increase of the water film thickness, can be used to explain the mechanism on viscosity-reduce effect of quartz powders.
