Abstract: Reinforced concrete structures have been widely employed for transportation infrastructure exposed to marine environments. The permanently immersed portion of a marine reinforced concrete sub-structure can be considered fully saturated. At elevations above water (i.e. tidal, splash and atmospheric regions), concrete experiences different degrees of water saturation. Hence, the concrete pore structure is only partially filled with water. Some theoretical and numerical studies have been conducted for analyzing the chloride ion penetration through partially saturated concrete. In recent years, new test methods have also been developed by several research groups. There is consensus that the degree of water saturation is an important factor in the ingress of chloride ions into concrete under these conditions. However, previous studies have generally focused on Portland cement concrete or mortar specimens.
This paper presents an experimental study on the chloride diffusivity through partially saturated high performance mature concrete (i.e. wet cured > 6 months). A test method similar to that proposed by Guimaraes, Climent, et al. was used. Three different degrees of water saturation relevant to Florida were investigated. It is expected that the outcome from this study will provide insight on the chloride diffusion properties and contribute to the base of knowledge of chloride diffusivity through the non-saturated high performance concrete.
