Abstract: The interface between aggregate and mortar or paste is a weak phase. It will have a serious effect on mechanical properties and durability of concretes. Because the high porosity and water absorption of the lightweight aggregate, the interface of lightweight concrete is different from that of normal weight concrete. In this research, the effect of interfacial interactions between lightweight aggregate and mortar on the mechanical and chloride ion transport properties of concretes was investigated. Test variables include the volume fraction of lightweight aggregate and the water-cement ratio. The elastic modulus, charges passed from RCPT, chloride ion penetration depth were determined. In the theoretical analysis part, lightweight aggregate can be considered as a three phase composite material (mortar, lightweight aggregate, interfacial transition zone). In addition, SEM and EDX is used to observe the microstructure of the interface.
