Abstract: Reusing of recycled aggregates in cement and concrete products is an effective option to
manage these wastes. However, due to its inferior quality and varying nature, recycled
aggregates are still restricted only to non-structural applications.
Carbonation reactions are known to be able to densify the matrix of old concrete and also
cause rapid hardening of fresh cementitious materials. This study employed a CO2 curing
process to enhance the properties of recycled aggregate concrete products. Experimental
results showed that properties of recycled concrete aggregate and eco-concrete blocks were
enhanced after CO2 curing process; mechanical and durable performance was also improved
for the concrete prepared with CO2 -treated recycled aggregate. Furthermore, there is a great
potential of CO2 sequestration by recycled aggregate concrete products. The life cycle
assessment results indicated that the production of concrete and concrete blocks with recycled
materials using CO2 treatment are environmentally sustainable resulting in reduced green
house gas emissions and lower non-renewable energy consumption .
