Abstract: A significant amount of the man-made CO2 emissions is caused by cement production.
However, the absorption of CO2 by concrete during its service life, demolition and recycling
has to be taken into account as well in order to assess the net contribution to the atmosphere.
Such a calculation for the boundary conditions present in Switzerland is described. So far,
such calculations have relied on an assessment of the carbonation coefficient K based on the
compressive strength. The increasing use of blended cements may require in the future an
alternative approach, rather based on the CO2 absorption capacity of concrete.
