Abstract: The authors have developed a new concrete technology which can achieve CO2 emission
below zero levels by capturing CO2 gasses contained in exhaust gasses from thermal power
stations. This concrete block is based on two typical features. The one is the use of a special
additive (dicalcium silicate γ phase: γ-2CaO・SiO2), blast furnace slag and coal-ash instead of
cement. These materials have very low level of CO2 emissions, and especially, γ-2CaO・SiO2
hardens concrete by reaction with CO2. Another feature of this concrete block is the capture of
CO2 contained in exhaust gas from thermal power stations. The concentration of CO2
contained in exhaust gas are 13 - 20%. After this concrete is molded, it is placed into
temperature and humidity controlled chamber. The chamber is filled with exhaust gas, and CO2
contained in the exhaust gas is captured in the concrete. The authors introduce CO2 emissions
of used materials, and shows the evaluation of the amount of capturing CO2 in concrete block.
Moreover, we explained the method of manufacturing of this concrete block and show the
physical properties of this concrete in this paper.
