Abstract: This paper describes the results of an investigation using electrical resistivity measurement to detect the time varying bulk resistivity development (rho-t curves) and pore solution resistivity development (rho0-t curves) of young concrete, with and without fly ash. The resistivity (rho) development with time (t) can be divided into a phi0 dominating period and a phi ?dominating period. The porosity formation process (phi-t curves) is derived from the rho-t curves, rho0-t curves, initial porosity and MIP data. Concrete with fly ash initially has a higher bulk electrical resistivity than without fly ash; however after a period of about 10 to13 hours, its effect is reversed. The results show that fly ash acts as a micro-aggregate insulator during the ions dissolving period, having a slower reaction and a lower pore-decreasing rate which contributes to a lower electrical resistivity in the hardening period. The results from the electrical resistivity method agree with other methods, such as SEM examination and mechanical compression strength testing at 3 days.
