Abstract: The present work was aimed to explore the possibility of assigning experimentally the optimum water content of cementitious mixtures, which is referred to here by “water demand value”. Three main concrete mixes having different paste volumes were designed. The experimental work proceeded in two main phases. Firstly, the water demand values of the paste and mortar mixes corresponding to the three main mixes were assigned experimentally, and those of concrete mixes were estimated. Secondly, it was found necessary to check the validity of the experimental technique in assigning the water demand value. Thereby, four mortar mixes and six concrete mixes corresponding to each of the main mixes were cast such that they have water content range cross the assigned water demand value. These mixes were of high enough workability due to the addition of superplasticizer at high dosage to allow their casting without any tamping nor vibration. Test results were clearly indicative of the merit of adopting the experimental technique to assign the water demand value of the cementitious mixtures, which is a step towards optimization of all mix constituents.
