Abstract: Since 9/11, there has been an increased interest in developing high toughness materials with a proven resistance to impact and blast loading. Such materials are useful in defence shelters, blast proofing retrofit schemes and in structures which are routinely subjected to energy intensive dynamic events. In the case of concrete, fiber reinforcement remains one of the most effective ways of enhancing its resistance to such dynamic loads. There are indications, however, that fiber reinforced cementitious composites show signs of increased brittleness at very high strain rates, and such a trend causes concerns. This paper provides a broad perspective on impact resistance of normal and high performance fiber reinforced concrete, recognizes challenges ahead and identifies issues that need further research.

Keywords: HPFRCC, impact resistance, blast loading, fiber reinforced concrete.
