Abstract: This paper presents a combined numerical and experimental method for a meso-scopic analysis of the local damage effects under planar loading conditions. For this purpose, the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) is utilized by augmenting the finite elements with special functions reflecting the discontinuities both in the matrix displacement and in the slip between the matrix and the reinforcement. In order to enable the modifications of the discretization during the computation the FE-Toolkit ORFEUS has been equipped with a general interface for performing an adaptive enrichment and refinement. The computation is controlled by displacement fields of the matrix obtained on the surface plane using the photogrammetric measurement. The modeling concept will be demonstrated on the analysis of shear zones with a detailed approximation of the local deformation fields in the crack bridge.
