Abstract: Textile reinforced mortar (TRM) is investigated in this study as a new method for strengthening and seismic retrofitting of concrete structures through jacketing. TRM jackets in this study consist of textile meshes made of carbon fibre rovings in two orthogonal directions and mortars – serving as binders – containing polymeric additives. A comprehensive experimental program was carried out in order to provide a better understanding on the effectiveness of TRM jackets as a means of increasing: (i) the axial resistance of plain and reinforced concrete (RC) through confinement; (ii) the shear resistance and the flexural resistance of RC members; and (iii) the deformation capacity of RC columns subjected to simulated seismic loading. By comparing the response of TRM-strengthened specimens with that of control (unstrengthened) and FRP-strengthened ones it was concluded that TRM jacketing is an extremely effective and promising strengthening technique for reinforced concrete.
