Abstract: Steel corrosion is one of the most important problems affecting reinforced concrete structures. The objective of the present research is to generate information about the type and distribution of the corrosion products that form around reinforcing bars. All the experimental tests were conducted with the objective to reproduce natural exposure conditions and no attempts were made to accelerate the corrosion reaction. Accordingly, reinforced mortar specimens were subjected to wetting and drying cycles. All cycles were performed using a sodium chloride solution. Test variables included type of cement, water/binder ratio, and steel bar surface preparation. The properties of the corrosion products were characterized at various stages of the reaction using two different techniques: Raman spectroscopy and microprobe analyses.
