Abstract: Nonpozzolanic fillers such as limestone powders, quartzite filler and chalk powders are frequently used to optimize the particle packing and flow behavior of cementitious paste in self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures. Powder materials play a role as suspension enhancing agent and used to improve rheological properties of fresh concrete. This paper deals with the influence of finely ground limestone on the properties of SCC mixtures in the fresh and hardened state. Mixtures were prepared using river sand with different gradation.
Obtained results indicate that fresh properties of SCC mixtures largely depend on sand gradation and that finer and better-graded sand significantly increases the deformability of the paste. On the other hand effect of sand gradation on properties of hardened concrete was investigated. It also appeared that the addition of filler has significant effect on compressive strength of concrete and improves the 28-day compressive strength of concrete mixes up to 55% due to the filler effect and improved fine-particle packing.
