Abstract: The introduction and subsequent acceptance of Self-compacting concrete (SCC) have been growing concern over meeting the criteria of fresh properties as well as hardened state. The self-consolidating and self-cohesiveness of the mix are major requirements in order to achieve sufficient flow with better segregation resistance. This paper deals with the problem of SCC composition by describing a new semi-empirical method for mix proportioning, which constitutes a combination of different dosification methods for high-performance concrete (HPC), extended to the SCC and adjusted to the characteristics of the component materials.
The criterion that rules this procedure is defined by the characteristics in fresh state that the SCC require; for this reason, the optimization was carried out on the paste, and granular skeleton, mix design and corrections according to the fresh concrete properties were determined from slump flow, V funnel flow, L box and sieve segregation tests. Concrete mixture examples designed using the proposed method are presented, and the results on fresh and hardened state verify the effectiveness and validity of this method.
