Abstract: In the present paper, experimental results of granular blocking obtained on model laboratory materials are presented. It is shown that the phenomenon is of a probabilistic nature. It is also demonstrated that the probability of granular blocking increases with the number of particles crossing the obstacles, their volume fraction and the ratio between the diameter of the particles and the gap between the obstacles. It is also shown that the phenomenon does not strongly depend on the rheology of the suspending fluid and can be described using a simple dimensionless geometric parameter. Finally, experimental results obtained on SCC prepared with rounded gravels are presented and application to SCC industrial casting is proposed.
