Abstract: This study reports some of the salient points regarding the placements of a combination type of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in a tunnel at the teaching and research mine of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany. The total pumping distance for the placement was 300 m including 150 m vertical along the gravity. Tests on suitable SCC formulations were conducted in the laboratory, at the concrete mixing plant and at the placement site.
Some essential aspects of SCC including calculation of water demand, flow, strength and air content are described. The reasons for difference in the flow response of a similar formulation when tested in the laboratory, at the plant and at placement site are also mentioned. The information contained in this paper would be useful for engineers engaged in using this modern technology.
