Abstract: Durability of concrete is influenced by the transport of aggressive substances into the concrete. An important influencing factor in this transport is the water content in the pores of the concrete. A high water content blocks the ingress of gasses, such as CO2. A low water content slows down the ingress of e.g. chloride ions.
In this paper, results of water vapour diffusion tests, will be discussed. The tests were carried out following the German standard DIN 52615 (1973) ‘Bestimmung der Wasserdampfdurchlässigkeit von Bau- und Dämmstoffen’.
16 SCC and 4 traditional concrete mixtures were tested. The investigated parameters were the type of cement (portland cement and blast furnace slag cement), type of filler (fly ash and two types of limestone filler with a different grading curve), type of coarse aggregate, total amount of powder and amount of water.
A good correlation between the water vapour diffusion coefficient and the capillary porosity, calculated following the method of Powers, is obtained.
