Abstract: Refractory concrete can be used to protect different process equipments built with carbon steel against elevated temperatures. They are used, for example, as lining in important applications such as petroleum refineries and steel making vessels. Considering that a selfcompacting refractory concrete would facilitate the cast procedure the time of turndown in this equipments would be reduced. Therefore, its mechanical properties under high temperatures must be determined. This paper presents an experimental program concerning the mechanical characterization of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting refractory concrete after being exposed to high temperatures. Stainless steel fibers were used as reinforcement with volume fractions of 0.7 % and 1% in a self-compacting matrix. Uniaxial compression, and four-point bending tests were performed after the material being exposed to firing temperatures of 110 °C and 650 °C. The testing temperature was nevertheless kept constant to room temperature. The mechanical tests showed that refractory concretes fired at 110 °C presented higher ultimate strengths with a more ductile behavior than the one presented at 650 °C. The fiber reinforcement improved the toughness of the refractory concrete.
